New Delhi. The tenure of the Joint Parliamentary Committee constituted on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill has now been extended till the last day of the budget session 2025. This proposal got approval in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. This decision was unanimously agreed upon in the committee meeting. The opposition had demanded extension of tenure

Committee Chairman Jagdambika Pal said that the report is almost ready and it can be presented in the House on time. But the opposition had objected to this and demanded extension of the tenure. Opposition leaders had also met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on this issue. In the committee meeting held on Wednesday, opposition members created a ruckus regarding extension of tenure. The opposition members walked out in the middle of the meeting. Trinamool MP Kalyan Banerjee alleged that most of the committee’s time was spent in discussions with people associated with the ruling party and the states where Waqf properties were the largest were not invited. However, after the meeting, MPs confirmed that an agreement had been reached to extend the tenure of the committee.

What is the whole matter?

On August 8, Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju had introduced the ‘Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024’ in the Lok Sabha. Along with this, ‘Muslim Waqf (Repeal) Bill, 2024’ was also introduced in the House to remove the old inactive Act. The new bill will be named the Integrated Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development Act (UMMEED). However, the opposition expressed strong opposition to this. On August 9, the bill was sent to the Joint Parliamentary Committee for detailed discussion.
