Thailand acting Prime Minister Fummatham Vachayachai and Cambodia Prime Minister Han Manet will hold peace talks on Monday, July 28, 2025 to resolve their border dispute in Malaysia. The talks will be held by Malaysia’s Prime Minister and ASEAN President Anwar Ibrahim. The Thai Prime Minister’s Office confirmed this on Sunday. The talks also include the role of US President Donald Trump’s mediation.
The move has been taken to end the deadly border dispute for four days, with at least 34 people killed and displaced more than 1,68,000 people. The two countries have accused each other of starting violence. The struggle erupted after a landmine explosion on Thursday, in which five Thai soldiers were injured. The two countries then called back their ambassadors and Thailand closed their border posts with Cambodia.
On Sunday, firing continued in some parts along the disputed border. Thai Army Deputy Spokes Colonel Richa Sukswanat said that Cambodian forces opened fire in Surin province in the early hours of Sunday, in which civilians were also targeted. Cambodia accused Thailand of using prohibited weapons such as cluster monsion, while Thailand has not denied these allegations.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had immediately appealed to the two countries under the chairmanship of ASEAN to a ceasefire. Trump posted on Truth social on Saturday that he spoke to the leaders of the two countries and warned that if the violence continues, he would cancel the trade agreements. The two sides then agreed to negotiate for the ceasefire.
Thailand’s Foreign Ministry stated that Fummm thanked Trump and agreed to the theory of ceasefire, but emphasized the need for “honest intentions” from Cambodia. Cambodian Prime Minister Han Mannet said on Sunday that his country agreed to pursue “immediate and unconditional ceasefire”.
The 800 km long Thailand-Kambodia border has been the subject of dispute for decades, especially in the Emerald Triangle region, where tension increased after the death of a Cambodian soldier in May. Global powers, including the United Nations, America, China, European Union and France, have appealed for peace and communication to both sides.
