The death toll in Ahmedabad aircraft accident reached 274, 241 passengers and 33 local people involved

On Thursday, June 12, 2025, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Ahmedabad, a few seconds after flying from International Airport to London’s Gatwick Airport, an Air India flight AI-171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed, in which 274 people died. The aircraft had a total of 242 people, including 230 passengers, two pilots and 10 crew members.

Only one passenger, British citizen of Indian origin, survived in the accident. The aircraft fell into the residential complex of the BJ Medical College in Meghaninagar area, causing a fierce fire. The dead include 241 passengers and 33 locals besides the crew, including four medical students, three doctors and a pregnant wife of a neurosurgery resident.

The black box was recovered from the rubble on Friday, which will be important in the investigation of the accident. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has constituted a high -level inquiry committee, which will submit its report in three months. The DGCA has ordered a security check of Air India’s Boeing 787 Fleet. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the spot on Friday and met the remaining person.

Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was also among the dead. World leaders, including Donald Trump, Kir Stmper and Mark Carney, expressed condolences. Parts of 319 bodies have been sent for the DNA test. Flights are suspended at Ahmedabad Airport, and Vande Bharat trains are being run for passengers. It is one of India’s deadliest aircraft accidents.
