The central government has issued new proposals to further tighten safety standards in Indian vehicles. Under this, it will be mandatory to install seat belt alarms on rear seats in all passenger cars from April 1, 2025. The purpose of this new rule is to increase the safety of passengers during accidents and reduce the chances of injuries.
Reason for change in rules
Restraint System: It is a system that helps to restrain the movement of passengers sitting in a vehicle during an accident and protects them from injury. It includes features such as seat belts, airbags, and seat belt alarming systems.
Motor Vehicles Act: The central government has proposed amendments to the Motor Vehicles Rules, under which the use of seat belts and alarm systems will be made mandatory in all passenger cars. This change will come into effect from April 1, 2025. Apart from this, seat belts will also be made mandatory in buses and heavy vehicles from April 1, 2026.
Importance of seat belts in accidents
Experts say that wearing a seat belt during road accidents plays an important role in reducing mortality. In 2022, about 16,715 people died in road accidents because they were not wearing a seat belt. This included 8,384 drivers and 8,331 passengers.
