Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh briefly mentioned its historical perspective on the occasion of the completion of 50 years of the establishment of the state of Sikkim and said that the Indian Republic has been highly enriched by the integration of this region. Sikkim came into existence on 16 May 1975 as a state of India.
Former Union Minister Ramesh posted on the social media forum ‘X’, “The 36th Constitution Amendment Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on 23 April 1975 and three days later by the Rajya Sabha.”
He said, “After this, the 36th amendment was enacted from the satisfaction of the President and on May 16, 1975, that is, Sikkim became the 22nd state of India exactly fifty years ago. Article 371-F of the Constitution included special provisions for it and its people.”
He said that the integration of Sikkim has highly enriched the Indian Republic and has many impressive achievements in the state account.
Ramesh mentioned that P.N. Dhar’s book ‘Indira Gandhi, The Emergency and Indian Democracy’ is the most internal description of how the merger occurred.
