A new twist in Maharashtra’s famous Kalyan rape and murder case came out when the main accused Vishal Gawli allegedly committed suicide in Taloja Jail in Navi Mumbai early Saturday. According to jail officials, Gawli hanged himself at around 3:30 am with the help of a towel. The body has been sent to JJ Hospital in Mumbai for post -mortem.
Vishal Gawli was lodged in Taloja Jail for the last three and a half months. In December, the police arrested Gawli and his wife Sakshi Gawli in connection with a heinous crime like rape and murder.
The incident had raised a wave of resentment throughout the state. Shortly thereafter, another case of sexual harassment was also reported from Badlapur, in which two minor children were suffering. The incident took place in August last year.
Reacting to the matter, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed deep concern over the increasing number of such crimes in the society. He said, “The solution is that our judicial system works fast and awareness should be spread in the society.”
Fadnavis also said that 95 percent of such crimes are committed by close relatives or acquaintances, who make it not only the issue of law and order but also a serious social problem. He emphasized that “society should have a feeling of sensitivity and respect for women and girls.”
After the alleged suicide of Vishal Gawli, questions are now arising as to why the jail administration did not assess his mental state and was the monitoring system in the jail sufficient? The investigation of the case is going on and there is a possibility that the jail administration will also be summoned.
