New Delhi: The study of data collected during the Chandrayaan-3 mission has shown that ice may exist just below the surface at more locations at the Moon’s poles than the pre-estimates. Durga Prasad Karanam, faculty member and prominent writer of the Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad, said that large, but excessive local changes can affect the manufacture of ice directly and by looking at these ice particles, “different stories about their origin and history can be revealed.”
He said, “This can also let us know how snow has accumulated and how to reach the surface of the moon, which can provide information about the initial geological processes of this natural satellite.” The findings related to this have been published in the magazine ‘Communications Earth and Environment’.

Chandrayaan-3, launched from Bengaluru by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), made ‘soft landing’ near the southern pole of the moon on 23 August 2023. Three days later, on 26 August, the ‘Landing’ site was named ‘Shiv Shakti Point’.
