Jagannath Temple at Digha
Bhubaneswar: A section of devotees and priests of Lord Jagannath in Odisha have expressed displeasure over portraying the newly constructed Digha temple by the West Bengal government as ‘Jagannath Dham’. Ramakrishna Dasmohpatra, who was the chief priest during the inauguration of the Jagannath temple in Digha on 30 April, also demanded the removal of the word ‘Jagannath Dham’ associated with the new temple in West Bengal on Friday. He said, “I also request West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to remove the word ‘Dham’ from the Digha Jagannath temple.”
‘Puri is the only Jagannath Dham’
Dasmohpatra said, “I also urge the Odisha government and Shri Jagannath Temple Administration to start a conversation on the matter. I think Puri is the only place called ‘Jagannath Dham’. ”He said that he will write a letter to Banerjee in this regard. Deputy Chief Minister KV Singh Dev said that Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi is aware of this development. Dev said, “I have limited knowledge and I am not as intelligent as his (Banerjee). I know that there are four ‘Dham’ in India. They should explain why they called the Digha temple ‘Dham’. There can be many Jagannath temples in the country, but Puri is the only Jagannath ‘Dham’. ”
Sudarshan Patnaik wrote a letter
Sudarshan Patnaik, a famous sand artist and awarded Padma Shri Award, has sought a clarification from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee regarding the matter. He accused Banerjee of hurting the religious sentiments of crores of devotees of Lord Jagannath around the world. After the inauguration of the Jagannath temple in Digha on Wednesday, Banerjee called it ‘Dham’. In a letter to Odisha Chief Minister Majhi, Patnaik said, “This step has deeply hurt the religious sentiments of millions of Jagannath devotees around the world.” According to our holy scriptures, there is only one ‘Jagannath Dham’ located in Puri. Connecting another temple to this name can cause confusion. ”
Patnaik said, “I request the Chief Minister of West Bengal to apologize to millions of devotees of Lord Jagannath to present the temple in Digha as ‘Dham’.” Madhav Mahapatra, former member of Shri Jagannath Temple Management Committee, appealed to Banerjee to avoid making such a “wrong claim”.
