New Delhi. Olympic medalist wrestler Bajrang Punia, who joined the Congress before the Haryana assembly elections, has been threatened with death. He received a threatening message on WhatsApp from a foreign number, in which he was threatened to leave the Congress. However, Bajrang Punia has lodged a complaint in this matter at Bahalgarh police station in Sonipat.
In fact, on Friday, Bajrang Punia officially joined the Congress and was also appointed the working chairman of the Kisan Congress. Two days after this, he received this threatening message. The message read, “Bajrang, leave the Congress or else it will not be good for you and your family. This is our last message.”
Police engaged in investigation
Sonipat police has started immediate action on the complaint made by wrestler Bajrang Punia. Police spokesperson Ravindra Singh said that Bajrang Punia has complained about receiving threats and the police is seriously investigating the matter. Police say that the person giving the threat is unknown and it is a matter of investigation.
Past controversies and foray into politics
This is not the first time Bajrang Punia has been embroiled in controversy. In 2023, he and wrestler Vinesh Phogat staged a massive protest against the then Wrestling Federation of India president and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over allegations of sexual harassment.
Talking about the assembly elections, Congress has not given ticket to Bajrang Punia, while Vinesh Phogat has been fielded from Julana assembly seat of Haryana. On not getting the ticket, Bajrang Punia had said, “Just contesting elections is not politics. We had already decided that only one of the two will contest the elections. Vinesh is contesting and I am supporting her.”
