You must have often heard of the turtle speed that turtles move slowly. However, such a case has come up, knowing which you will also be surprised. Actually, a turtle in India has covered a distance of just 51 days 1000 km. It was tagged the tracking device attached to the satellite with Olive Ridley Turtle to measure it. The turtle completed 1000 km in 51 days from Gahirmatha beach to Andhra Pradesh in 51 days from Gahirmatha beach located in centerpada of Odisha. An official said that during this time the turtle traveled from the sea area of Sri Lanka, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Prem Shankar Jha gave information about this. He said that the latest tracking satellite of the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) found out about one of the tagged tags roaming in Andhra Pradesh. It was told that this turtle has completed the journey of about 1000 km in 51 days.
Why turtles are tagged
According to the officials, every year about 3000 turtles are tagged with the tracking system. It has to be tagged at least one lakh turtles, so that information can be collected about them. In this, it is important to gather their reproduction, traffic, growth rate, migration route and information about food areas. In this sequence, the Odisha Forest Department started the tagging exercise in 1999. However, it was later stopped and then the Zoological Survey of India resumed it in 2021.
Turtle reached Maharashtra to launch eggs
According to officials, about 12,000 turtles were tagged between 2021 and 2024 in the grounds located at the mouth of the Gahirmatha and Rushikulya river. Similarly, about four years ago, a turtle from Odisha reached Maharashtra. It was also tagged with tracking equipment, which covered a distance of 3500 km. This turtle came to lay eggs on the beach of Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra. Similarly, the turtles come to the mouth of the Rushikulya river in Ganjam district and the mouth of the Devi River in Puri to make nests collectively. (Input-PTI)
