Jimmy Carter was the third US President to visit India. He was considered a friend of India. He visited India in the year 1978 after the lifting of Emergency in India and the victory of Janata Party. On January 3, 1978, Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn Carter went to Daulatpur Nasirabad village near New Delhi. The journey was so successful that after some time the residents of the village renamed the area ‘Carterpuri’.
Celebration celebrated in Carterpuri in honor of Nobel
According to the Carter Center, Jimmy Carter’s mother, Lillian, also worked there as a health volunteer with the Peace Corps in the late 1960s. When Jimmy Carter received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, there was a celebration in Carterpuri village. Along with this, there is a holiday in Carterpuri on 3rd January. This visit of Jimmy Carter laid the foundation of a lasting partnership between India and America, which greatly benefited both the countries.

Jimmy Carter gave a big message during his visit to India. He had said – “India’s difficulties, which we often experience ourselves and which developing countries especially have to face, remind us of the responsibilities of the future. Not of the authoritarian way.” Carter said, “Is democracy important? Do all people value human freedom?
