Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
New Delhi: Responding to the two-day long discussion on ’75 years of glorious journey of the Constitution of India’ in the Rajya Sabha, Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday fiercely targeted the opposition. Taking aim at the Congress and other opposition parties for raising doubts on the use of electronic voting machines i.e. EVMs in the elections, Shah said that when the assembly election results of two states are declared on the same day and in one, a party gets swept. And if she has won in the second, then those who question EVMs should be ashamed.
‘Goed to Tappa in Jharkhand, wore new clothes and took oath’
Taking aim at the Congress, Shah said that after losing the elections, the people of this party roam around with the EVM saying that it had defeated them. He said that the Supreme Court rejected 24 applications related to EVMs and the Election Commission invited people to hack EVMs for 3 days but no one came. Shah said that in the recent Maharashtra Assembly elections, the opposition was wiped out and the people of Maharashtra punished the betrayal that was done with the mandate. He said, ‘On the same day they (opposition) won in Jharkhand. EVM is faulty in Maharashtra and in Jharkhand he went to Tappa and took oath wearing new clothes. Hey brother, feel ashamed, the public is watching.
‘Now some politicians call themselves young at the age of 54’
While replying to the discussion on the Constitution, Shah said that the Constitution of India is not a copy of anyone. He said that in the Constitution of India, along with taking the good aspects of the constitutions of different countries, it has taken full care of the traditions of our country. Without taking the name of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, the Home Minister said in gestures, ‘Some politicians have come recently, at the age of 54 they call themselves youth. They keep roaming around and saying that they will change the Constitution, they will change the Constitution. I want to tell them that the provision for changing the Constitution is in Article 368 of the Constitution itself. He said that BJP ruled for 16 years in which the Constitution was amended 22 times whereas in the 55 years of Congress rule the Constitution was amended 77 times.
‘The first amendment was meant to curtail fundamental rights’
Amit Shah claimed that it remains to be seen who amended the Constitution for the betterment of the citizens of the country and who made changes in it to preserve their power. Referring to the constitutional amendments made during the rule of former Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, the Home Minister said that the first amendment to the Constitution was brought to curtail the fundamental rights of the citizens. He criticized Congress for imposing emergency in the country and toppling the elected government by imposing Article 356. (Language)
