The Modi government at the Center passed the Waqf Amendment Bill from the Lok Sabha on 2 April and then on 3 April from the Rajya Sabha. Along with the signature of President Draupadi Murmu, it will replace the old Waqf law. Many provisions of the new Waqf law have been abolished by the Modi government. There is also Section 40 among them. Under Section 40 of the Old Waqf Act, the Waqf Board had the right to consider any land as a Waqf and take it into its possession. Apart from this, after the new Waqf law is implemented, the ongoing disputes on Waqf properties are also expected to be banned. The Modi government says that the new Waqf law will increase income from Waqf properties and this will benefit poor Muslims and women and children. The new Waqf law provides that the rest of the property can be done only after distributing the property to the daughters and other heirs of the family.
