Trinamool Congress leader and MP Mahua Moitra has approached the Supreme Court challenging the order of the Election Commission of India for special intensive revision of the voter list in Bihar.
Mahua said in her petition that she requests to quash the June 24 order of the Election Commission, under which special intense revision (SIR) is being done by violating various provisions of the Constitution.
According to the petition, “The current writ petition filed in the public interest under Article 32 of the Constitution requested the cancellation of the order issued by the Election Commission of India on 24 June.” Under the order, special intensive revision of voter lists is being done in Bihar, which violates the provisions of Article 14, 19 (1) (A), 21, 325, 328 and Public Representation Act, 1950 and Electoral Registration Rules, 1960 of the Constitution. “
Mahua said in the petition, “If this order is not canceled, it can deprive large -scale eligible voters in the country of franchise, which can weaken democracy, independent and fair elections.”
Mahua requested the apex court to direct the Election Commission of India to stop the issuance of such orders for special intensive revision of voter lists in other states of the country.
The petition filed through advocate Neha Rathi said, “Those voters are being asked to prove their eligibility, whose names are already in the voter list or have voted many times before.”
The NGO ‘Association of Democratic Reforms’ has also filed a similar petition, which has challenged the Election Commission’s instructions for the intensive revision of the voter list in Bihar.
