US President Donald Trump on Monday termed the Indo-US trade equation as a “one-side disaster”, claiming that India had offered to reduce US goods and reduce them to “zero”. However, he also said that it is now “late” for it.
In his new comment, Trump once again pointed out India’s business relations with Russia. His response has come at a time when his government has imposed a huge tariff of up to 50% on India. Trump’s gesture was towards a long -stained trade talks between the two countries, which did not immediately react from the Government of India.
Trump’s claim came to light when American Treasury Secretary Scott Besant expressed concern over the slow pace of trade talks last week and stated India’s oil imports from Russia as a major reason for tariffs. Trump’s top advisor Peter Navaro even said that “Brahmins” oil refiners are making profiteering from Russia.
Here Prime Minister Narendra Modi has returned from visits to Japan and China and emphasized decades -old relationships with Russia, which is being seen as a sign of a possible reshuffle in the global trade equation.
Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social, “We do very little business with India, but they do a lot with us. The reason is that India has so far put so high tariffs on us that our companies have not been able to sell goods there. It has been completely unilateral and destructive.”
According to data, in 2024 India bought $ 41.5 billion goods from the US, while exporting $ 87.3 billion. In this way India got a trade surplus of $ 45.8 billion. In the first six months of 2025, India exported $ 56.3 billion to the US, while imported by $ 22.1 billion.
Trump again stated that India “mostly oil and military equipment buys from Russia, much less from the US,” and alleged that this is the reason why India was first imposed on 25% and then up to 50% in total. He claimed, “India has now offered its tariff to zero, but now it is late. It should have done it years ago.”
