New Delhi. The Central Government has issued a notification regarding the introduction of Unified Pension Scheme i.e. UPS. All the Central Government employees who are in the National Pension Scheme i.e. NPS can now choose NPS or UPS if they wish. In the notification issued for UPS, the Central Government has said that UPS will be implemented from April 1, 2025. The Central Government has made UPS attractive in view of the opposition of the employees towards NPS. Central government employees taking UPS will get more benefits on retirement than before.

Central government employees who choose UPS will get a guaranteed pension of 50 percent of the average salary of the last 12 months of service. Apart from this, whatever dearness allowance is declared by the Central Government from time to time, the employees will also get the benefit under UPS. However, employees choosing UPS will not get any other policy concessions, policy changes and any other financial benefits. In NPS, central government employees contribute 10 percent and central government contributes 14 percent. In UPS, the Central Government will contribute 18.5 percent of the basic salary of the employee. 23 lakh central government employees will be able to benefit from this.

To get full pension under UPS, the length of service of employees should be at least 25 years. At the same time, if an employee has worked only for 10 years or more, then there is a provision to give him a minimum pension of Rs 10,000. After the death of an employee, there is a provision in UPS to give 60 percent of the pension to any one eligible member of his family. Introducing UPS will put an additional burden of Rs 6250 crore on the central government in 2025. Let us tell you that for the last several elections, government employees have been demanding the Old Pension Scheme i.e. OPS. NPS was implemented for the employees joining the service from the year 2004.
