The Supreme Court refused to withdraw the CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) security to Unnao’s rape victim on Tuesday, saying (on) () there was still a possibility of danger.
A bench of Justice Bela M Trivedi and Justice PB Varle, however, removed the CRPF security to his family members and other witnesses, saying that the matter had been convicted.
The bench said, “We believe that the security given by this court to the concerned people should not be continued as the convict in the case has been sentenced to life imprisonment.”
The bench said, “However, we want to clarify that CRPF security for the victim will remain intact till the next order of this court.”
The apex court said that if family members and other witnesses still feel threatened, they are free to go to the local police.
During the hearing, Additional Advocate General Aishwarya Bhati argued that the case has been convicted. He sought permission from the apex court to withdraw CRPF security to witnesses.
The Center had filed this petition requesting to withdraw the CRPF security provided to him following a court order in 2019.
Kuldeep Singh Sengar, an expelled leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party, is serving life imprisonment in jail in the case of raping a minor girl in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh in 2017.
On August 1, 2019, the apex court directed the rape victim, her mother, other family members and her lawyers to provide security by CRPF.
