The administration in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district on Thursday started the restoration and excavation work of the ancient “death well” in Kot Purvi located in the Sambhal Kotwali police station area.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to identify and restore wells that are believed to have great religious and spiritual significance. According to the local people, this well had become empty several years ago and was filled with debris, which will be cleaned.
Local people claim that this well is not only a historical site but also a holy place, where devotees believe that taking a bath brings them salvation.
This well is deeply embedded in the spirituality of the region and is highly respected by the local people due to its mythological significance.
Local councilor Gagan Varshney said, “The digging work of the death well is starting on Thursday. It is a very ancient and revered place. The digging work is going on with the help of the municipality. This well is very popular and its restoration. Our faith will be further strengthened. The district administration has been very supportive in ensuring the development of this important cultural and religious place.
Local officials claim that the excavation and restoration of the “death well” is expected to boost religious tourism potential in Sambhal.
The well is located near the Shahi Jama Masjid, a court order to survey which had sparked violence last month in which four people were killed.
