Eight people were killed and five others were injured when a jeep fell into a deep ditch on Tuesday in Suni village of Thal area of Pithoragarh district. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami mourned it and also announced the ex -gratia amount.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the incident and announced financial assistance to the families of the deceased.
Shankar Singh Rawat, in -charge of the police station, said that the accident happened when the vehicle going to Bokta village with passengers from Muvani market lost control and fell into the ditch.
He said that the dead include five women and three men, all local residents and the driver is also included in them.
On receiving the information, police and state disaster redemption force (SDRF) personnel reached the spot and started rescue and relief operations with the help of local residents. Officials said the injured were taken out of the ditch and admitted to a hospital in Muwani for treatment.
Pithoragarh District Disaster Management Officer Bhupendra Singh Maher said that all eight bodies have been recovered. He said that prima facie accident seems to be the cause of the driver’s negligence and more goods in the vehicle.
District Magistrate Vinod Goswami also said that it appears that the vehicle had more passengers than capacity.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami wrote on the social media platform ‘X’, “The condolences expressed by the Prime Minister on the Pithoragarh road accident and the financial assistance provided by the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund will strengthen the bereaved family in this difficult time.”
He said that the state government will also provide a assistance of Rs 2 lakh to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 thousand to the injured.
Dhami said, “The state government is fully standing with the families of the dead and committed to provide all possible help to the injured.”
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday condoled the death of people in a road accident in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand and said that the families of the deceased would be given an ex -gratia amount of Rs 2 lakh from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
The PMO said in a post on X, “I am saddened by the loss of life and property in a road accident in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand. Condolences to those who lost my loved ones in the accident. I wish the injured to get well soon. The family of each deceased will be given an exemption of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF. The injured will be given Rs 50,000.”
