On Monday, a cabinet meeting was held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami at the State Secretariat, in which the cabinet approved the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) rules.
This approval has been given after thorough scrutiny by the Legislative Department, which had already reviewed the manual. On UCC, Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami said that our government fulfilled the promises made before the 2022 elections.
He said the implementation dates would be announced soon.
After the meeting, Dhami told media persons, “We had promised the people of Uttarakhand in 2022 that as soon as our government is formed, we will bring the Uniform Civil Code Bill. We brought it. The drafting committee drafted it, it was passed, The President approved it and it became an act. The training process is also almost complete. We will announce the dates soon.”
The BJP government had introduced the Uniform Civil Code Bill in a special session of the Uttarakhand Assembly on February 6 this year and it was passed with an absolute majority a day later on February 7.
The Uniform Civil Code Bill was passed by the Uttarakhand Assembly in February and President Draupadi Murmu signed it on March 13, paving the way for Uttarakhand to become the first state in India to enact a Uniform Civil Code.
The purpose of the Uniform Civil Code is to establish a set of uniform personal laws that apply to all citizens, regardless of their religion, sex or caste. This will include aspects such as marriage, divorce, adoption, inheritance and succession.
