Veteran industrialist Ratan Tata died in a hospital in Mumbai late on Wednesday night. The honorary chairman of the Tata Group was 86 years old, a top police officer told PTI.
Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran confirmed Tata’s death in a statement and described him as his “friend, mentor”.
For the last few days, he was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in South Mumbai. Billionaire Harsh Goenka also tweeted about Tata’s demise, calling him a “titan”.
Prime Minister Modi condoled the demise of Ratan Tata, calling him a visionary business leader, a kind soul and an extraordinary human being.
PM Modi wrote, “My heart is filled with countless conversations with Shri Ratan Tata ji. When I was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, I used to meet him often. We used to exchange views on various issues. I loved his perspective. Felt very enriching. Deeply saddened by his demise. My condolences to his family, friends and fans.
He said, “The most unique aspect of Shri Ratan Tata ji was his passion to dream big and give back to others. He was at the forefront in pursuing issues like education, healthcare, sanitation, animal welfare.”
The PM wrote, “Shri Ratan Tata ji was a visionary business leader, a kind soul and an extraordinary human being. He provided steady leadership to one of India’s oldest and most prestigious business houses. At the same time, his contributions went well beyond the boardroom. He won his place among many because of his humility, kindness and an unwavering commitment to bettering our society.”

Tata Group said in its statement that this is a big loss for us. He has not only taken the Tata Group forward but also the country.
Harsh Goenka informed about Ratan Tata’s demise and posted on Instagram, “The clock has stopped ticking. The legend has passed away. Ratan Tata was an epitome of integrity, ethical leadership and philanthropy, who touched the business world and beyond.” He has left an indelible mark. May he always rest in peace.
