Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar confirmed on 21 July 2025 that he received a notice signed by more than 50 MPs for the impeachment of Justice Yashwant Verma, Judge of Allahabad High Court. He announced on the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament, “I have received notice to set up a statutory committee to remove Justice Yashwant Verma. I received this notice today and it is signed by more than 50 MPs, which fulfills the numerical requirement to start the process of removing the High Court judge.” Dhankhar instructed the Secretary-General Secretary to take “necessary steps” in this direction.
The notice is related to a dispute that started after a cash cache was found after a fire at the official residence in Lutyens area of Delhi in March 2025. The three -member inquiry committee constituted by the Supreme Court found Verma and his family guilty of controlling the storeroom, which was considered serious misconduct. Verma was then transferred from the Delhi High Court to the Allahabad High Court and was not assigned any judicial work.
Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said that 152 Lok Sabha MPs have also submitted a similar proposal to the Lok Sabha Speaker. Dhankhar said that Section 3 (2) of the Judge (Investigation) Act will be implemented with the proposal in both the houses. Those signing the notice include BJP, Congress, TDP, JD (U), JD (S), Shiv Sena, and CPI (M) MPs, including leaders like Rahul Gandhi, KC Venugopal, Ravi Shankar Prasad and Supriya Sule.
Justice Verma filed a petition in the Supreme Court questioning the fairness of the inquiry committee, claiming that he was not given the evidence and concluded without his statement. Dhankhar also questioned the FIR not being registered in this case earlier, saying that if it had happened to a common citizen’s house, the investigation would have been fast. Emphasizing the transparency of the judiciary, he said, “The trust of the public in the judiciary should be stuck.” This matter will become the subject of intensive debate in Parliament
