Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigns, referred to health reasons

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his post on Monday, 21 July 2025 citing health reasons. In his letter to President Draupadi Murmu, he said, “To give priority to health and follow medical advice, I resign with immediate effect as Vice President of India, which is according to Article 67 (A) of the Constitution.”

74 -year -old Dhankar took over as the Vice President of India in August 2022. In March this year, he was admitted to AIIMS-Delhi for four days due to cardiac problems. In his resignation, Dhankhar thanked President Murmu for unwavering support and spontaneous work relations with him. He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Council of Ministers, saying that the Prime Minister’s cooperation and support has been invaluable.

Dhankhar in his letter always talked about remembering the “warmth, trust and affection” received from the Members of Parliament. He said, “It has been a matter of good fortune and satisfaction for me to see and participate in the country’s remarkable economic progress and unprecedented development in this transformational era of India.”

Prior to his appointment to the post of Vice President, Dhankar was the Governor of West Bengal from 2019 to 2022. The news of his sudden resignation has created a stir in political circles. According to the Constitution, a new election will have to be held within 60 days if there is a vacancy to the post of Vice President. Currently, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh will temporarily play the role of Chairman of Rajya Sabha.

Dhankhar in his letter expressed pride in India’s global rise and achievements and expressed unwavering confidence in the bright future of the country. This development indicates a significant change in India’s political scenario, and now everyone’s eyes are based on the appointment of the Vice President’s successor.
