Chennai: A video of Indian Institute of Technology, Madras Director V. Kamakoti is fast going viral on social media. In this video he can be seen praising the ‘medicinal properties’ of cow urine. V. Kamakoti was speaking on the importance of protecting the indigenous breed of cows and adopting organic farming.
Kamakoti said this in a program organized at ‘Go Sanrakshan Shala’ here on the day of Mattu Pongal (January 15, 2025). He made this comment while narrating an anecdote from the life of a monk who consumed cow urine after suffering from high fever and was cured. The director reportedly talked about the “anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and digestion improving properties” of cow urine and said that it is useful for problems like irritable bowel syndrome, a disease related to the large intestine, and its Advocated consideration of ‘medicinal properties’.
Opponents said, this is against the truth and “shameful”.
He made this comment underlining the importance of organic farming and the vital role of indigenous breeds of cattle in agriculture and the overall economy. On the other hand, rationalist organization Dravida Kazhagam criticized his comment on cow urine, saying it was against the truth and “shameful”. DMK leader TKS Elangovan hit out at Kamakoti over his remarks and alleged that the central government intended to ‘spoil’ education in the country. Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam leader K. Ramakrishnan said Kamakoti should provide evidence for his claim or apologise. “If he does not apologise, we will protest against him,” he said.
Karti Chidambaram also raised questions
Congress leader Karti P. Chidambaram condemned Kamakoti’s remarks and said, “It is inappropriate for the director of IIT Madras to publicize such a thing.” IIT director on ‘cow protection’ to protect cows Emphasizing that it has economic, nutritional and environmental benefits. Kamakoti is the director of IIT Madras from 17 January 2022.

Sources close to Kamakoti said that he spoke at the Gaushala event, but he himself is an ‘organic farmer’ and his comments were in the broader context.
