New Delhi: Former Maharashtra State Women Commission chief Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar has been appointed the 9th chairperson of the National Commission for Women i.e. NCW. She will replace Rekha Sharma in NCW. A government notification issued on Saturday said that this appointment, made under Section 3 of the NCW Act, 1990, will be for a period of 3 years or till Rahatkar turns 65 (whichever is earlier). According to the notification, Rahatkar’s tenure will begin with immediate effect and the announcement will also be published in the Gazette of India.
‘I will fulfill my responsibility with full dedication’
Reacting to her appointment, Rahatkar said in a post on I thank Amit Shah. I will fulfill this important responsibility with full devotion. It aims to move towards women-led development by enhancing the capabilities, opportunities and quality of life of women in various dimensions such as education, health, employment and social participation.’
NCW works towards women’s rights
According to a notification from the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Dr. Archana Majumdar has been officially appointed Chairperson of NCW for a tenure of 3 years. NCW works towards women’s rights. Its functions include reviewing the constitutional and legal safeguards provided for women. The ministry said in a statement that Rahatkar has shown leadership skills in various political and social responsibilities.
Did many important works in Maharashtra
While being the Chairperson of Maharashtra State Women’s Commission (2016-2021), she founded ‘Sakshma’ (helping acid attack victims), ‘Prajjwala’ (linking self-help groups with central government schemes) and ‘Suhita’ (for women Led initiatives like 24-hour helpline service. Rahatkar also worked on legal reforms, focusing on issues such as the POCSO Act, anti-triple talaq cells and anti-human trafficking units. Rahatkar also started digital literacy programs and started a publication called ‘Saad’ dedicated to women’s issues.
Rahatkar has been honored with many honors
During her tenure as mayor of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar from 2007 to 2010, Rahatkar implemented important development projects related to health care and infrastructure. He has a graduation degree in Physics and a master’s degree in History from Pune University. Rahatkar has also written several books including ‘Vidhilikhit’ and ‘Aurangabad: Leading to Wide Roads’. She has been honored with several honors for her contribution to women’s empowerment, including the National Law Award and the Savitribai Phule Award given by the National Literary Council.
