Why will voting be held in two phases in Jharkhand this time?
In 2014 and 2019, Jharkhand Assembly elections were conducted in 5 phases. This time it will be in 2 phases. The main reason for this is that the security forces have effectively stopped the terrorism of Naxalites in Jharkhand. In the last few years, the campaign against Naxalites has been intensified in Jharkhand. Security forces killed all the Naxalite leaders. Apart from this, hundreds of Naxalites surrendered and joined the mainstream.
By-elections may also be announced
During the press conference, the Election Commission may also announce by-elections on three Lok Sabha seats and 47 assembly seats, which are vacant due to various reasons. The vacant Lok Sabha seats include Wayanad in Kerala, Nanded in Maharashtra and Basirhat in West Bengal. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had won from Wayanad and Rae Bareli seats in the last Lok Sabha elections. Gandhi had vacated the Wayanad seat, while retaining the Rae Bareli seat. After the recent demise of Congress MP Vasant Chavan, representing Nanded seat, and Trinamool Congress MP Haji Sheikh Nurul Islam, representing Basirhat seat, it has become mandatory to hold elections on these seats.
