Police forces are on high alert in many cities of the country to prevent any protest or violence after the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 passed by Parliament on Friday morning. Additional police personnel have been deployed in sensitive areas of Delhi and many cities of the country in anticipation of Friday prayers. These areas include major educational institutions like Shaheen Bagh, Jamia Nagar and Jamia Millia Islamia.
Last month, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board called for a silent protest against the law by tying a black band during the prayer of goodbye Jumma. The purpose of this law is to change the administration of Waqf properties in the country.
According to a report, Delhi Police has deployed companies of Central Armed Police Forces in sensitive areas of the city. CCTV cameras and drones are also being used to monitor roofs and streets.
Protests in cities
Thousands of people took to the streets in Kolkata, Chennai and Ahmedabad after weekly prayers on Friday and opposed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025. In Kolkata, a large number of people in the photographs appeared to be waving the national flag and holding posters, which wrote “We reject Waqf Amendment” and “Reject the Waqf Bill”. According to news agency ANI, many of these protests were organized by the United Forum for Waqf security.
In Ahmedabad, the atmosphere of protest appeared even more fierce. In a video shared by ANI, police officers appeared trying to forcibly remove the elderly protesters sitting on the road.
A similar view was seen in Chennai, where actor Vijay’s Tamilga Vatri Kazagam (TVK) had called for a state -wide protest. TVK supporters gathered in major cities like Chennai as well as Coimbatore and Tiruchirappalli and raised slogans like “reject the Waqf Bill” and “Non-Hit Rights of Muslims”.
Opposition criticized the bill
Some top leaders said that the purpose of this bill is to target their existence in the Muslim community and the country. Some leaders also highlighted that the nature of the bill sets an example that can be used to target other communities and religious minorities.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi wrote on X that this bill is a weapon made with the aim of marginalizing Muslims and grabbing their personal laws and property rights. Mahua Moitra of TMC said that the Waqf Bill is a divisive factor for the Muslim community. “This bill tells every Indian Muslim that” You are not the same citizen of India, know your place, your rights are not like us. ” Moitra told ANI, “I have never felt as sad and shame in the Lok Sabha yesterday.”
