Discussion on the Waqf Bill across the country.
Discussions are going on across the country on the Waqf Amendment Bill proposed by the Central Government. Various Muslim organizations and leaders are constantly opposing this bill. However, the Modi government has also got a big support on the Waqf Amendment Bill. The Kerala Catholic Bishops Council has supported the Waqf Bill and appealed to MPs to vote in favor of the bill.
KCBC made this appeal
The Kerala Catholic Bishops Council (KCBC), while supporting the Waqf Amendment Bill, 2024, has urged state MPs to vote in favor of it when the bill is introduced for discussion. In a press release of March 29, 2025, the KCBC has sought amendment to the “unconstitutional and unconstitutional sections” of the Waqf Act.
Waqf Board has claimed 404 acres of land
The press release issued by the KCBC mentions the Munamban land dispute in which the Kerala State Waqf Board claimed about 404 acres of land in Munambam suburb of Ernakulam district of Kerala. The claim was opposed by 600 families living on land, including Hindus from Christians and backward classes of the Latin Catholic community. The families emphasized that they had legal rights on the land, as they bought it from Farooq College decades ago.
BJP appreciated KCBC
Through the press release, KCBC President Cardinal Clameis Katolika Bawa, Vice President Bishop Poly Kannukatan and General Secretary Bishop Alex Vadakkumthala urged MPs of Kerala to support the amendment of the “objectionable” parts of the Waqf Act. The BJP, who is trying to get closer to the Christian community in Kerala, has appreciated the stand of KCBC.
Learn about KCBC
KCBC Kerala has a powerful organization of Catholic bishops belonging to Siro-Malabar, Latin and Siro-Malakara churches. The KCBC has also filed a petition before the Joint Committee of Parliament, which is discussing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill on this issue. After the Munamban land dispute, the ruling CPM of Kerala and the opposition Congress party had come out in favor of the land occupiers, promising that those who have legitimate documents would not be evicted. However, both parties have opposed the Waqf Amendment Bill of the Center.
Victims will get justice- KCBC
KCBC says that the support of the Waqf Amendment Bill will give justice to the victims of Munamban. The state government had appointed a judicial commission to find measures to protect the rights of the occupiers, but the High Court recently canceled the appointment of the commission. The issue has posed a danger of differences between various communities. That is why a constituent of the Congress -led opposition coalition UDF has come up in favor of Christian occupants on the Indian Union Muslim League Munambam land. The IUML has held several rounds of talks with the bishops and assured them that neither the party nor the Muslim community will be in favor of evicting the land occupiers. KCBC’s support for the Waqf Bill is an important development for the BJP for the BJP engaged in strengthening its political land in Kerala.
