Pithoragarh: In most parts of the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, where other parts of the country have been celebrated nowadays, in its internal northern part, more than 125 villages, people stay away from the fun of this festival of colors for fear of wrath of their patriarchs. Puranik Pandey, a resident of Munsiyari town, said, “People from more than 125 villages in Talla Darma, Talla Johar area of Pithoragarh district and Malla Danpur areas of Bageshwar district do not celebrate the festival of Holi because their Kuldevata gets angry at playing with colors.”

Holi is a Sanatani Hindu festival that starts from the first Sunday of the month of Magh and runs till the Pratipada of Krishna Paksha of Chaitra month. Padam Dutt Pant, cultural historian of Eastern Kumaon region, said, “This Hindu Sanatani festival brought the King of the Chand dynasty of Champawat in the 14th century in the Kumaon region. The kings started it through Brahmin priests, so wherever the priests were influenced, this festival was spread. Areas where Holi is not celebrated, these are the areas where Sanatan traditions did not reach completely. ”

This is the recognition of people

Dan Singh Koranga, a resident of the Sama region of Bageshwar, said, “There is a belief in more than a dozen villages in the Sama region that if the rural colors play with colors, then their scholars punish them as natural disasters.” Not only the remote villages of the Kumaon area but the three villages of Rudraprayag district in the Garhwal area-Khuri, Khurjhang and the residents of one other village were also natural Holi has not been played for the last one and a half years after these villages were wreaked havoc as a disaster. Pant said, “Holi is not celebrated not only in many areas of Uttarakhand but also in many tribal villages of Banaskantha in Gujarat and Durgapur areas of Jharkhand for fear of curse or fear of their anger.”

Not allowed to wear colored clothes

Journalist Jeevan Varti of Madkoti in Talla Zohra region of Pithoragarh district said that Holi is not played in many villages in his region who believe in the clouded Kedar deity. It is believed that Chilli Kedar is angry not only with colors but also with the romantic songs of Holi. He said, “The devotees of the Chilli Kedar located on the 3700 meter high hill are not allowed to wear colored clothes till the worship of the deity and during the journey.” During the puja, all the devotees, including the priests, only wear white clothes. ”He said that Holi is still banned in these areas in view of the wrath of the Kuldevas, but Hindu Sanatani festivals like Diwali and Dussehra have started getting place in these remote areas. Varti told that Ramlila is being staged in these villages and Diwali is also being celebrated. (With language inputs)
