On 12 June 2025, an important step has been taken forward in the investigation of the Air India aircraft accident in Ahmedabad. On Thursday, 26 June 2025, the data has been successfully removed from the black box (flight data recorder) of the aircraft and its memory module has been reached. Civil Aviation Minister K.K. Rammohan Naidu had told on 24 June that the accident was being investigated by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) and will not be sent abroad.
Soon after flying to London on 12 June, the aircraft hit a medical hostel, with only one of 241 passengers and crew members saved lives. In the accident, 33 people were also killed on the ground, causing the death of the dead to 274. The data from the black box will help in detecting the engine malfunction, pilot error or technical fault due to the accident.
In simple language, the box is a special device of the aircraft that records important information related to flight. It is actually divided into two parts – flight data recorder (FDR) and cockpit voice recorder (CVR). FDR records technical information such as aircraft speed, height, engine status, direction, while CVR secures the interaction between pilots and air traffic control, the sounds of the cockpit and alarm.
Although its name is ‘Black Box’, it is actually orange in color to easily get the debris after the accident. It is made from very strong material which is also safe in very high temperatures, pressure and water. After the plane crash, the black box itself helps to understand why and how the accident happened.
It is analyzed by experts to prevent future accidents. That is, the black box not only brings out the truth, but also plays an important role in improving aviation security.
Meanwhile, Aaib secured the Crash Protection Module (CPM) on 24 June and downloaded the data on 25 June. This information can accelerate the investigation, although experts say that data analysis will take time. The US and Britain teams have also been supporting the investigation since the accident, as the aircraft Boeing was 787–8 Dreamliner.
