The Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday made extensive remarks on Nimisha Priya case during the weekly press conference and told what the Government of India is doing on the matter. The ministry said that the government is in touch with some friendly governments on this matter.
In fact, a 37 -year -old Nurse from Kerala was to be hanged on July 16 after a trial court of Yemen convicted a Yemeni citizen, on July 16, the decision was retained by the country’s Supreme Judicial Council in November 2023.
Talking to reporters on the matter, Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal highlighted various steps taken by the Government of India to provide assistance to the family.
This includes legal assistance, family regular seizures regularly and maintaining contact with various governments by the Government of India in this matter.
Jaiswal said, “Nimisha Priya’s case is very sensitive and the Government of India is providing all possible assistance in this matter. We have provided legal aid and have also appointed a lawyer to help the family. We have also arranged a regular consular meetings for her family regularly and we are also in contact with local officials and family members to resolve the issue.”
He said, “This includes concrete efforts made in recent times to find more time to find solutions to the family of Ms. Nimisha Priyal with a mutual consent with the other side. Local authorities of Yemen have postponed her punishment on July 16. We are constantly monitoring the matter and are providing all possible assistance. We are also in contact with some friends governments in this regard.”
When asked about the role of Grand Mufti in the request to postpon Nimisha Priya’s sentence, a spokesman of the Ministry of External Affairs said, “As far as the role of the institution you have mentioned, I have no information to share in this regard.”
This remark of the Ministry of External Affairs came after the statement made by Grand Mufti Sheikh Abu Bakr Ahmed Kanthapuram on Tuesday in which he spoke to scholars in Yemen and appealed to him to release 37 -year -old Nimish Priya, convicted of murder and hanging. Grand Mufti claims that the news of the hanging was also reported only after his conversation.
Grand Mufti told ANI, “It is also custom to give diya (compensation) instead of murder in Islam. I have requested him to accept Diyat as the party is ready for it. The conversation is going on about whether my request should be accepted. The date of hanging was yesterday, but now it has been postponed for a few days.”
Grand Mufti had said that he is not considering Priya’s religion, but is considering her humanity, as she requested her release.
Mufti’s remarks came when sources had earlier told ANI that the 37 -year -old nurse from Kerala has been postponed after the “common efforts” of the Government of India. Earlier this hanging was to be held on 16 July.
According to sources, his family has got additional time to find a solution with mutual consent from this adjournment. Amidst the diplomatic efforts issued by the Indian authorities, they maintain regular contact with the office of Yemen’s jail authorities and prosecutors and understand the sensitivity of the situation to achieve this relief.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday expressed relief and hope for the postponement of Indian nurse Nimisha Priya who was sentenced to death in Yemen. He described this development as “comfortable and hopeful” and said that it has given additional time to end his sentence.
Vijayan appreciated the frequent efforts and intervention of others including Kanthapuram AP Abubakar Muslim and Action Council, who are tirelessly efforts to provide justice to Nimisha Priya.
