Indus Water Agreement stopped
After a major terrorist attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian government has taken a tough stand against Pakistan. After the CCS meeting ended under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a spokesman for the Ministry of External Affairs said that the Indus Water Agreement with Pakistan has been stopped. Also, Pakistani citizens have been ordered to leave India in 48 hours. At the same time, Pakistan’s visa has been canceled. It has been decided to close the attic border as well. In such a situation, let us know, what is the Indus Water Agreement?
Indeed, the Indus Water Agreement i.e. Indus Waters Treaty is a historic water agreement between India and Pakistan, which was in 1960. It was signed by the then Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru and President of Pakistan Field Marshal Ayub Khan and the World Bank played the role of an arbitrator. The purpose of this agreement was to peacefully resolve any kind of dispute between India and Pakistan over the sharing of water of the Indus river system.
There are a total of 6 major rivers in the Indus river system-
Indus Jhelum chenab Ravi Beas Sutlej
Water sharing under agreement
Western rivers: Pakistan got the water rights of Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab.
Eastern rivers: India got the water rights of Ravi, Beas and Sutlej.
India is allowed to use limited use on western rivers, such as-
Irrigation domestic use water without stopping power generation
What will be affected on Pakistan?
This is the first time India has banned the Indus Water Agreement. About 80% of Pakistan’s agricultural irrigation is dependent on the Indus Water System. The water crisis in Pakistan will arise in Pakistan and it will affect agriculture. At the same time, many hydropower projects related to the Indus River are in Pakistan. In such a situation, due to lack of water, their production will be affected and the energy crisis will be deepened, which is already a major problem in Pakistan. At the same time, millions of people in Punjab and Sindh regions of Pakistan are dependent on this river system for drinking water.
