Indus water treaty will be postponed

After the ceasefire, a source of the Ministry of External Affairs said that the Indus Water Treaty will be postponed even after the ceasefire. This is not a pre -or post -condition. This call was made by Pakistan. Indus Waters Treaty took place between India and Pakistan. Which was broken after the Pahalgam terror attack and India closed the Dam of the Indus River. Due to which the water towards Pakistan stopped going. Now India wants to keep this water treaty closed after the ceasefire. There is no talk on this yet.

What is Indus Water Treaty

The Indus Water Treaty is an important international agreement. Which was done with the splitting of Indus water. The treaty was implemented between the two countries in Karachi on 19 September 1960. The treaty was signed by both countries. The treaty was medically meditated by the World Bank. The Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab River were mainly divided under this treaty. As a result, about 80% of the total water of the Indus river system was received by Pakistan and 20% of India. The use of water of these three rivers and water storage was mainly given to Pakistan. India can use these rivers water such as irrigation, hydroelectric, navigation, but permission to prevent or divert water is limited. Under this treaty, Eastern rivers Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi were given rights to India. Pakistan has no right over the water of these rivers.

A commission was also made for this

A commission was also formed to maintain this treaty. Which is called Permanent Indus Commission. This commission discusses the issues related to water between the two countries and find a solution. This commission regularly meets and shares data for the Indus Water Agreement.
