New Delhi: The Supreme Court reprimanded the Assam government for not deporting those who were declared foreigners. The apex court asked the state government led by Himanta Biswa Sarma whether it was waiting for a “Muhurta” (auspicious time) to deport those 63 foreigners.
A bench of Justice Abhay S Oka and Justice Ujjal Bhuiyan asked the Assam government to deport the people declared foreigners during the process of updating the National Civil Register (NRC) in the state.

Justice Oka said that Assam is suppressing the facts, to which India’s Solicitor General Tushar Mehta replied that he had spoken to the supreme authority and apologized for “some shortcomings”. Justice Oka said that we will issue you notice of false testimony. You have to clean up. However, the state’s lawyer said that “there is no intention of hiding”.
Can not keep anyone in custody forever: Court
Subsequently, Justice Bhuiyan asked, “Once you declare a person a foreigner, you should take the next logical step. You cannot keep them in custody forever. Assam has several foreign custody centers. How many have you deported? “After this, the bench directed the Assam government to immediately deport illegal immigrants.
Rejecting the state’s reaction that the addresses of foreigners in their countries were not known, Justice Oka said that you should deport them in their country’s capital. Suppose that person is from Pakistan, then you know the capital of Pakistan? Do not keep them in custody by saying that their foreign address is not known? The bench said that foreigners should be deported immediately.

Justice Oka said, “You know the status of his citizenship. Then how can you wait till they get their address? This is to decide where they should go. He also asked Assam why he did not submit a proposal to the Ministry of External Affairs to seek help in completing the process.
