Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India DY Chandrachud is scheduled to retire on November 10. CJI Chandrachud has recommended the name of senior-most Supreme Court judge Sanjiv Khanna as the next Chief Justice to the Central Government. CJI Chandrachud on Wednesday wrote a letter recommending Justice Khanna’s name to the Union Law Ministry. Now on November 11, Justice Sanjiv Khanna will take oath as the 51st Chief Justice of India. Justice Sanjiv Khanna is the senior most judge in the Supreme Court after DY Chandrachud. On January 18, 2019, Justice Sanjeev Khanna was promoted as Supreme Court judge. Justice Sanjiv Khanna’s tenure as CJI will be a little more than six months. He will retire on May 13, 2025.
Justice Sanjeev Khanna’s studies
Justice Sanjiv Khanna was born on 14 May 1960. Justice Sanjiv Khanna studied law from the ‘Campus Law Centre’ (CLC), Faculty of Law, University of Delhi. Justice Sanjiv Khanna was elevated as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in 2005 and was made a permanent judge in 2006.
Big decisions of Justice Sanjeev Khanna
Some of the major decisions of Justice Sanjiv Khanna in the Supreme Court include upholding the use of EVMs in elections. Apart from this, he was also a part of the five-judge bench which declared the electoral bond scheme of political parties as unconstitutional. He was part of a five-judge bench that had upheld the Centre’s 2019 decision to abrogate Article 370 related to Jammu and Kashmir.
CJI gave copy of recommendation to Justice Sanjeev Khanna
Chief Justice DY Chandrachud has handed over the copy of the recommendation made to the Central Government to make the second senior Supreme Court Justice Sanjiv Khanna the Chief Justice. Justice BR Gavai, the third most senior judge of the Supreme Court, was also present on this occasion. (input language)
