There has been a major change in the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW). Raw has chosen a new secretary. Parag Jain, senior IPS officer of 1989 batch, has got its responsibility. This appointment came into effect on Saturday, 28 June 2025, and Jain will hold this post for 2 years. He was currently employed as Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau (IB). His appointment was approved by the Central Government’s Appointments Committee (ACC), and it will be replaced by the existing R & AW chief Samant Kumar Goel to retire on 30 June 2025.
Jain, who is from Madhya Pradesh cadre, is known for his expertise in intelligence and security matters. He was appointed at a time when India is dealing with terrorism and regional security challenges across the border, especially after the terrorist attacks in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir and then after Operation Sindoor. Jain’s experience reflects his ability to handle various sensitive matters in the IB, and this appointment expects a new direction in R & AW.
Actually, Raw is the major external intelligence agency of India. It was formed on 21 September 1968, and is responsible for India’s national security. The main task of RAW is to monitor intelligence, terrorism, espionage and other security threats abroad. It works under the Government of India and operates under the Prime Minister’s Office.
Raw’s activities are confidential, including monitoring military, political and economic activities of enemy countries. In addition, it also takes action against terrorist organizations and intelligence with friend countries. Recently, Parag Jain has been appointed as its new secretary on 28 June 2025, who can give it a new direction. The mission of Raw is to protect India’s sovereignty and integrity.
