New Delhi. Today is Chhoti Diwali. It is also called Narak Chaturdashi. Narak Chaturdashi is celebrated in the name of the demon named Narakasura. There is an ancient belief that Lord Shri Krishna had killed Narakasura on the Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month. According to ancient stories, Narakasura was the king of Pragjyotishpur. He was very strong. Narakasura is said to have troubled the heavenly king Indra and other gods. He had also taken many gods captive. Narakasura had also kidnapped the wives and daughters of many kings.
According to the ancient story, Indra conveyed the information about the atrocities of Narakasura to Lord Krishna. He requested Lord Krishna to kill Narakasura and free the earth from his terror. On this, Lord Shri Krishna along with his wife Satyabhama reached Pragjyotishpur and called Narakasura for war. Narakasura sent his 6 sons to fight Lord Krishna. Lord Shri Krishna killed all the sons of Narakasura. After killing the sons, Narakasura fought with Lord Shri Krishna and according to the ancient story, the Lord also killed Narakasura and freed 16000 women from his captivity. Since then, Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month is also called Narak Chaturdashi.
