Madurai: Preparations have been completed to choose the next general secretary of the Marxist Communist Party i.e. CPM. Now speculation has intensified about who will take over the command of the country’s largest leftist party. In this race, M.A. Baby and Ashok Dhawale are being told at the forefront. According to sources, Baby, a member of the Polit Bureau since 2012, is a strong contender for the post. He has the support of the party’s Kerala unit.
A section of the party in favor of the runner
Sources said that a section of the party is in favor of giving this responsibility to the All India Kisan Sabha i.e. AIKS President Ashok Dhawale, as agricultural issues are still in discussion and the party is trying to increase its base in rural areas. Sources said that CPM is insisting on creating a platform for leftist unity and secular, democratic forces to counter the Bharatiya Janata Party, so Dhawale’s supporters believe that it will be better for this role.
Discussion on the name of Vrinda Karat also
Sources said that Dhawale also has the support of the West Bengal camp and many believe that he will prove to be helpful for the party in the Hindi belt. Mohammad Salim, another senior member of the Polit Bureau, is also being counted among the contenders for the post. However, according to sources, Salim has expressed his desire to continue as the secretary of the party’s West Bengal unit. The name of Telangana leader and senior -most member of CPM Polit Bureau is also under discussion. At the same time, another section of the party believes that this post should be considered in the name of the fiery leader Vrinda Karat.
Names will be recommended on Sunday
The CPM has set a age limit of 75 years for the members of the Central Committee, but in some cases it can be exempted. In the past too, Kerala and West Bengal camps have supported different candidates in the election of CPM general secretary and interesting contests have been seen. The outgoing Central Committee will recommend names for the election of new members at the 24th party conference in Madurai on Sunday.
Polit bureau will also be elected
Explain that the representatives can raise objections regarding any proposed name. They can also recommend new names with prior approval of the members concerned. The Central Committee will also elect the Polit Bureau including the General Secretary among its members. The number of members of the Polit Bureau is decided by the Central Committee. The post of CPM General Secretary has been vacant since the death of Sitaram Yechury last year. After Yechury’s death, Prakash Karat took over as the interim coordinator of the party. (Language)
