The Delhi Police on Sunday started an investigation into the stampede at New Delhi railway station and said that it would analyze CCTV footage to know the order of the incidents before the chaos.

Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Northern Railway Himanshu Upadhyay said that Magadh Express going to Patna was standing on platform number 14 at the time of the incident and New Delhi-Jammu North Sampark Kranti Express was standing on number 15.
Explaining the reason for the stampede, he said, “Some people were descending from the footover bridge to platform number 14 and 15 using the stairs, they slipped and fell on others.”
Sources said that due to the delay of trains and the sale of 1,500 general tickets every hour, there was a situation of chaos at New Delhi railway station.
