Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma dismissed the fear of fear being spread by Pakistan, saying that if China reduces the water flow of the Brahmaputra river, it can be helpful in reducing the floods coming every year in Assam. He made this statement through a post on social media and described it as a “fear -spreading nectar”.
Chief Minister Sarma said that about 30-35% of the water flow of the Brahmaputra river comes from China, which mainly arises from the glacier melting and limited rainfall in Tibet. The remaining 65-70% water flow occurs in India due to monsoon rain and subdivisions.
He said that India is not dependent on the upper flow of Brahmaputra as it is a rain-based river, which becomes stronger in Indian territory. He also said that China has never officially threatened to stop water flow and even if it happens, it can reduce the floods of Assam.
Sarma also targeted Pakistan and said that Pakistan has been taking advantage of the Indus Water Treaty but India is getting back sovereignty on its water resources. He said, “Brahmaputra is not a river that can be controlled from a source.”
