The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a petition requesting to make arrangements for two percent reservation for disabled persons in Parliament, Assembly and Gram Panchayat elections.
A bench of Justice BR Gawai and Justice Augustine George Christ said, “How can we issue such instructions?” This is a matter of policy. ”
The bench personally asked the petitioner who was present in the court, “If it were related to employment or any other subject, we could have considered it. But how can we give this instruction? ”
The petitioner cited an order given by the Supreme Court on November 8, 2024, in which the Center was directed to implement compulsory access standards within three months.
The bench said that if the disabled are not able to access a public office, the apex court is making sure that this is possible.
The bench said that the court has said that there should be lifts and ramps in public offices, so that the disabled do not have any difficulty in reaching.
The apex court said, “We are not keen to consider this petition. Hence the writ petition is dismissed. ”
The petition requested the apex court to direct the Center and others to provide a maximum of two percent reservation for the disabled persons in the elections.
