TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) recently sought suggestions from telecom operators and other stakeholders for recharge plans that include only calling and SMS. Private telecom companies like Airtel, Jio and Vodafone-Idea (Vi) have submitted their responses to this.
Telecom companies have said in their reply that their existing recharge plans are designed in such a way that users do not need a separate voice or SMS plan. In these plans, users are given facilities like unlimited calling, data and SMS, which improves the user experience. Companies say that the existing unlimited plans are proving to be more successful than the old pay-as-you-go model and that is why they are following this model.
Airtel told TRAI that their existing plans are simple, which makes them easy for users to understand and no hidden charges are taken in them. Therefore, users are fully aware of the benefits being given in these plans and they are choosing voice, data and SMS plans according to their needs.
TRAI had issued this consultation paper under the Telecom Consumer Protection Regulation (TCPR) 2012, in which suggestions and feedback were sought from stakeholders. Apart from this, TRAI also asked whether color coding would be the right step in the digital medium, but telecom companies have insisted on continuing with the existing system.
This makes it clear that telecom companies want to continue with the existing plans and they do not feel the need to introduce separate voice or SMS only plans.
