Reliance Jio is set to challenge the dominance of Google One and iCloud with its 100GB free cloud storage offer. Experts believe the move could create a big buzz among Android and Apple phone users in India, which platforms like Dropbox and Microsoft’s OneDrive have so far not been able to do.
Increasing competition in the world of cloud storage
This new offer may force not only Jio but also other major companies like Google and iCloud to reduce their prices. Currently, Google One’s 100GB storage is available for ₹130 and iCloud’s 50GB storage is available for ₹75. Indian companies like Ola and MapMyIndia have also started challenging big rivals like Amazon Web Service (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google.
Jio’s strategy: Thinking beyond data
Jio’s move is not just limited to data storage. Using Jio Cloud will give the company access to a huge collection of users’ data, which will be helpful in training their AI models. This is the same strategy that companies like Google and Apple are already adopting, in which photos are classified together through face recognition technology.
The growing dominance of Indian tech companies
Jio’s move has further strengthened the strength of Indian tech companies. Earlier in June, Ola announced its move out of Azure Cloud and started using its homegrown Krutrim Cloud. After this, in July, Ola launched Ola Maps, cutting the cost of Google Maps by 70%.
