United Nations. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for a ceasefire in Syria, saying 11 years of brutal fighting in the war-torn country must end.
“We cannot fail the Syrian people. The conflict must end. International humanitarian law must be respected,” the UN chief said.
“I call on all parties to meaningfully engage in the political process supported by the United Nations and appeal for further support to enhance the humanitarian response. We must choose peace,” Xinhua news agency quoted Guterres as saying. “
A top UN official said Syria’s 11-year brutal fighting has resulted in a heavy price for the people and human rights violations.
“The destruction suffered by the Syrian people is so widespread and deadly that it has little to do with modern history,” the secretary-general said.
He said the slow but orderly destruction of infrastructure across the country since the civil war began in 2011 in the wake of the so-called ‘Arab Spring’ of popular uprisings in the Middle East has deepened the economic crisis and since the conflict began now. Human needs are at their highest.
The UN chief said, “We must not lose hope. We must act now. We must have the courage to move beyond rhetorical commitments to peace and to reach a negotiated political solution in line with Security Council Resolution 2254 (2015)”. And must show determination.”
So far more than 380,000 people have been killed and many cities have been destroyed in this 11-year conflict. Thousands of citizens have fled here.
