12 August 1947: Let us start this morning from Mahatma Gandhi’s Sodepur Ashram located near Kolkata (then Calcutta). Today Suhrawardy has come to meet Mahatma Gandhi. Suhrawardy is the same person who has the sin of killing more than 5000 Hindus on his head. And Suhrawardy roams around with this sin on his head as a matter of pride. After the prayer meeting, Mahatma Gandhi clarified the reason for Suhrawardy’s visit to the Ashram in his address.
He told that Suhrawardy sahab came to meet me last night. He told me that I should not leave Kolkata in such a disturbed situation. He has also requested me to stay here till peace is established in Kolkata. Mahatma Gandhi further said- Before accepting this request, I have put a condition in front of Suhrawardy sahab.
And that condition is that Suhrawardy sahab should stay with me under one roof in some disturbed area of Kolkata. During this time, there should be no presence of police or army there. He further said that within the next one or two days the boundary commission will clarify the decided line of partition. In such a difficult time, Hindus and Muslims will have to respect the decision of the commission.

Mahatma Gandhi said- it will be foolish on 15/8…
Prashant Pole has written in his book ‘Those fifteen days’ that in his address Mahatma Gandhi further said that I have heard that Indians living in Portuguese and French ruled states like Goa, Daman, Diu and Pondicherry are also going to declare independence on 15th August. Doing so is completely foolish. This will only mean that we Indians have become arrogant. At present, the British are leaving India, not the French or the Portuguese. I believe that Indians living in Portuguese and French ruled states will become independent sooner or later. But, at present they do not need to take the law in their own hands.

Kak’s ploy with the Maharaja on Kashmir
Prashant Pol has written in his book ‘Those fifteen days’ that Lord Mountbatten had advised to merge Kashmir with Pakistan during his meeting with Maharaja Hari Singh. Maharaja Hari Singh had outright rejected this advice. Seeing this attitude of Maharaja Hari Singh, his Prime Minister Ramchandra Kak played a new trick. Kak’s intention was that if Kashmir is not being merged with Pakistan, then it should not be merged with India under any circumstances. Therefore, Kak advised Maharaja Hari Singh to keep Kashmir independent.
Meanwhile, Kak had openly taken on the Congress and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. A few days later, Mahatma Gandhi, who reached Srinagar, asked Maharaja Hari Singh to expel Kak. He said this on the insistence of Jawaharlal Nehru. On 12 August 1947, Maharaja Hari Singh dismissed Kak and appointed Janak Singh as the Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. Also, Ramchandra Kak, who was trying to escape, was put under house arrest.
