Air Pollution Deaths in India: Air pollution is proving to be fatal for people. A new study has revealed that every year thousands of people are losing their lives due to air pollution in the country’s big cities including Delhi. Many cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai are being affected due to pollution, but the condition of the capital Delhi is the worst among these cities. Most deaths in India due to air pollution are happening in Delhi. A new study by Lancet has revealed frightening figures of deaths due to air pollution. Many important things have come to light in this study.
Indian Express report According to the study published in Lancet, this is the first multi-city study of its kind conducted in India. It has revealed that about 11.5 percent of the deaths in Delhi every year are due to air pollution. If we understand from the data, about 12,000 people are dying every year in the capital due to poisonous air. This study was done in 10 big cities of the country. It has revealed that on an average more than 33,000 deaths occur every year due to air pollution in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, Pune, Shimla and Varanasi.
See here the statistics of deaths due to pollution
Delhi | 11964 |
Mumbai | 5091 |
Kolkata | 4678 |
Chennai | 2870 |
Ahmedabad | 2495 |
Bangalore | 2102 |
Hyderabad | 1597 |
Pune | 1367 |
Varanasi | 831 |
Shimla | 59 |
Most deaths in Delhi, less in Shimla
On one hand, Delhi is the city with the highest number of deaths due to pollution, while Shimla has the lowest mortality rate among these cities. In Himachal’s capital Shimla, only 59 deaths occur every year due to air pollution, which is about 3.7 percent of the total deaths. The study says that about 7.2 percent of the total deaths in these 10 cities, that is, about 33,000 people die every year due to air pollution. The study found that the concentration of PM 2.5 in these 10 cities of India is much higher than the safe limit (15 micrograms per cubic meter) set by the WHO. This is the situation on 99.8% of the days.
For this study, the researchers collected daily death data from civil registries in these 10 cities between 2008 and 2019. Only 3 to 7 years of daily death data was made available for each city during this period. In total, more than 36 lakh deaths were examined in these cities. The researchers used previously developed machine-learning based exposure models on air pollution data in several cities.
As pollution increases, there is a greater risk of death!
It is worth noting that in this study, for every 10 micrograms/cubic meter increase in PM 2.5 level, a 1.42 percent increase in mortality was recorded in all 10 cities. Delhi saw a 0.31 percent increase in mortality while Bengaluru saw an increase of 3.06 percent. This showed that people living in less polluted cities have a higher risk of death due to pollution than people living in polluted cities. Researchers say that this study can help in understanding many things about pollution and health in India.
