Peshawar: A massive fire broke out in a school in a hilly area of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The lives of school girls were in danger due to this fire. About 1,400 girl students were evacuated safely from the school building on Monday. This information was received from a media report. Geo News quoted a rescue official as saying that the fire broke out in the Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Sirikot village of Haripur district when hundreds of girl students were inside. He said that firefighters along with local residents started extinguishing the fire.
The official said fire tenders had difficulty reaching the spot due to the hilly terrain. Haripur Rescue 1122 spokesperson Faraz Jalal said there were around 1,400 girl students and all of them were evacuated safely from the school building. The spokesperson said the school building was completely damaged in the fire. The rescue department confirmed there were no casualties and said half of the school building was made of wood.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Secretary Nadeem Aslam Chaudhry confirmed that the fire in the school building was caused by a short circuit. Chaudhry said the incident was being investigated and the school would be made operational soon. Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is a troubled province, where school buildings have often been targeted by terrorists. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur said rescue officials acted timely and evacuated the girl students. The chief minister said the education department and the district administration would submit a report regarding the accident. He said all educational institutions would be reviewed so that such an incident does not happen in the future. Gandapur said the provincial government would compensate for the damage caused by the fire. (Language)
