What is Posthumous Sperm Retrieval: An Australian model Elide Pullin was living a very happy life with her Olympic snowboarder husband Alex. Alex was a very famous winter Olympian. Both were trying for a baby for a long time but could not succeed. Suddenly one day this happy life was destroyed. One day Alex was performing the trick of fishing in the depths of the sea, in the process he suddenly died. Alex and Elide’s settled world was shattered in a moment. The husband died but Elide went a step ahead to keep his memories in her womb. Elide decided to become the mother of her dead husband’s child with his sperm. You must be thinking how can this happen. For this, News 18 spoke to Sir Gangaram Hospital. Urologist Dr. Amarendra Pathak talked to.
How to extract sperm from a dead person
Senior Urologist at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital Dr. Amarendra Pathak He told that actually, if someone’s husband dies and his wife wants a child from her husband, then it is possible. There are many techniques for this. The name of this technique is post death sperm retrieval. That is, the technique of extracting sperm from the body of a dead or brain dead man. Although this happens rarely, but the sperm of a man whose brain is dead but whose body is biologically working can be extracted and frozen and a woman can become a mother with this sperm. If a man dies and then one wants to extract sperm from him, then it has to be seen whether blood circulation is going on in that person or not. If it is going on, then there is a higher chance of extracting sperm from him. For this, sperm has to be extracted within 24 to 36 hours of the man’s death. However, the doctor will decide whether the sperm should be extracted from that man’s body or not.
What is the technique of sperm extraction?
Dr. Amarendra Pathak told that two-three types of procedures are adopted to extract sperm. One procedure is called TISA i.e. testicular sperm aspiration. The second is micro-TISA. During this process, the man’s testicles are cut open. Then it is seen through a microscope where the sperm is. Then the sperm is separated from the tissue with a needle and the sperm is pulled into the needle. Now it is kept in a special kind of fluid. The sperm continues to get nourished with this fluid. After this the sperm is frozen. Now whenever the man’s wife wants, she can get pregnant with this sperm.
How does a woman get pregnant with this sperm
Dr. Amarendra Pathak told that when a woman wants to get pregnant with this sperm, then she goes to a fertility expert and gets ICSI i.e. ICSI Intracytoplasmic sperm injection You can get pregnant through this procedure. In this procedure, first of all, it is seen through ultrasound in the woman when the egg was formed. When the egg is formed, then by a special method, the egg is removed from the ovary and a test tube baby is prepared. Then this egg is fused with the frozen sperm of the man. Then it is harvested. When both of them together become 8-10 cells, then this tissue culture is implanted in the uterus of the woman. If everything is right, then the embryo continues to develop normally in the woman’s womb and after nine months the baby can be born.
how much does it cost
Dr. Amarendra Pathak says that this is a very complex medical procedure. An expert doctor is required to complete it. In India, one session of ICSI procedure can cost up to two to two and a half lakh rupees.
