Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sharma
Around 1,500 families illegally settled on forest and railway land in Assam’s Morigaon district have been asked to vacate the area. District Commissioner Debashish Sharma, while talking to reporters on Monday, said that these families of around 10,000 people have settled on government land in Silbhanga village of Jagiroad. He said that the people of this area were given a notice on June 12, in which people have been asked to vacate this land within 10 days.
Some families asked for time
He said that most of these families have followed this order. Devashish Sharma further said that children of some of these families are going to appear in different examinations, for which they have asked for time. As a humanitarian gesture, we have decided to make arrangements for their stay till the examination is over. The District Commissioner said that the administration is working to vacate this land without using force and without demolishing the structures.
Illegally occupied land
He said that we talked to the people and they have agreed to do so. About 80 percent of them have already removed their belongings from the illegally occupied land. To ensure that no untoward incident takes place in the area, District Commissioner Devashish Sharma visited the area during the day. Security forces have also been deployed here. The District Commissioner said that we hope that people will leave the area peacefully. (Language)
