Tokyo. Two people were killed and 92 others were injured in a massive earthquake that struck northeastern Japan late Wednesday. Police and fire officials gave this information on Thursday. As of Thursday morning, a total of 92 people were injured in seven prefectures, including Miyagi and Fukushima, where the quake recorded a magnitude of 7.4, Xinhua news agency quoted the Fire and Disaster Management Agency as saying.
Strong tremors were felt in the northeastern and eastern regions of the country, especially in Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures.
The earthquake occurred at around 11:36 pm. Local time Wednesday was north latitude of 37.7 and east longitude of 141.7 and a depth of 60 km.
A tsunami warning of up to 1 meter was issued for coastal areas in Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures, urging residents to stay off the coast.
The East Nippon Expressway Company has temporarily closed several sections of the expressway, including the Tohoku Expressway in Osaki, the Jban Expressway in Miyagi Prefecture and Soma, Fukushima.
